Biking in South Lake Union: Routes & Tips

A smiling woman walking next to a bicycle on an urban street with modern buildings in the background. Vertical text reads "BIKE SCORE" next to a large orange number "86."

With a Bike Score of 86, South Lake Union (SLU) blends a highly connected local infrastructure with scenic water views. Because it's a major tech and commercial hub, it caters to everyday commuters, weekend explorers, and everyone in between. Chroma offers secure indoor bike storage for $15/month.

1. The Essential Routes & Connections

SLU easily connects to Seattle’s major bike arteries via three key routes:

  • The Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop: A mostly flat 6-mile loop circling the entire lake. It is perfect for casual riders and showcases views of Gas Works Park and the local houseboats.
  • Westlake Cycle Track: A dedicated, protected two-way bike path on the west side of the neighborhood that separates cyclists from vehicle traffic and offers a direct shot toward Fremont.
  • Dexter Avenue N: A bustling commuter spine featuring buffered bike lanes and a steady climb heading north toward Queen Anne.

The neighborhood is also actively evolving to improve rider safety:

  • The RapidRide J Line Progress: Transit and safety upgrades along Eastlake Ave E are adding low-level concrete buffers for new protected bike lanes, significantly upgrading the connection between SLU, Eastlake, and the U-District.
  • The Seattle Transportation Levy: The city continues to focus on filling "missing links" and upgrading paint-only lanes to physically protected infrastructure throughout the urban core.

3. Practical Tips for SLU

A. Navigating Nearby Hills
While SLU sits flat on the water, leaving the neighborhood means fighting steep Seattle hills. You can outsmart the terrain with these routes:

  • The Capitol Hill Hack: Instead of biking straight up Denny Way—which is steep, narrow, and heavily congested—use the Harrison St to Melrose Ave connection. It breaks the climb into a safer, more manageable grade.
  • The Queen Anne Escape: If you are headed toward Upper Queen Anne, completely avoid the vertical wall of Taylor Ave. Instead, use the Thomas St overpass to cross over Aurora Ave safely.

B. Keep in Mind

  • SLU is heavily flooded with e-bikes and e-scooters. If you use them, watch out for geofenced "No Parking" zones. Because of the dense corporate plazas (like the Amazon campus) and Lake Union Park’s wooden boardwalks, the apps will heavily throttle your speed or fine you if you attempt to end your ride outside of designated sidewalk zones.
  • Be incredibly careful around the Seattle Streetcar tracks on Westlake and Terry Ave. Never ride parallel or at a shallow angle to them.
  • SLU features heavy foot traffic from local tech campuses. Slow down and yield on shared multi-use paths, especially near Lake Union Park.

C. Weather & Wardrobe

  • The Lake Effect Wind: While the Westlake Cycle Track is pleasant in the summer, riding north along the water in late autumn or early spring can involve a cold headwind. Keeping a windbreaker in your bag is recommended.
  • Streetcar Tracks & Rain: Seattle drizzle mixed with the metal Seattle Streetcar tracks on Westlake and Terry Ave makes the asphalt slick. Always cross streetcar tracks at a sharp 90-degree angle to prevent your tires from getting trapped in the flangeway.

D. Bike-Friendly Pit Stops
SLU features a buzzing evening patio scene right on the water. When meeting friends, choose establishments with excellent outdoor bike visibility. Places like White Swan Public House or the patios near MOHAI / Lake Union Park let you lock up your bike securely and keep an eye on it while grabbing a drink.
