History

A story of transformation and innovation, the South Lake Union neighborhood was formed in the mid-1800s when David Denny, one of Seattle’s founding pioneers, established logging operations in the area. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, SLU grew into an industrial hub with sawmills, shipyards, and factories. However, post-WW II manufacturing declines created a patchwork of warehouses and underutilized spaces.

In the 1990s, Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc. spearheaded the redevelopment of SLU, transforming it into a modern hub for tech, biotech, and research. The early 2000s saw major investments, including Amazon’s headquarters, the Seattle Streetcar, and the development of Lake Union Park. Today, SLU is a vibrant neighborhood, home to tech giants, research institutions, modern apartments, and green spaces, reflecting Seattle’s growth and innovative spirit.
